Using "AND"
If you put an "AND" between two words or phrases, you require that both these words or phrases shall be contained in the reference. If, for example, you are searching for underhåll(maintenance) AND tunnlar(tunnels), you will find references that contain both these words.

Using "OR"
If you want to search for synonyms or translations of a word or phrase, you put an "OR" between these, for example kollektivtrafik(public transport) OR busstrafik(bus traffic).

Using "NOT"
You can also exclude references which contain a certain word and/or phrase by using "NOT". If you are searching for miljö(environment) NOT buller(noise), you will get hits for all references which contain miljö but not buller.

Word or phrase
If you write a word and click the search button, the database will search for references where precisely this word occurs. You can also search for a phrase, for example norra länken(northern link). You will then get hits for references where these two words occur together in just this way.

Truncating
By truncating with a question mark ?, you replace the beginning and/or end of a word. If you are searching for transport?, you will get hits for references that contain the words transporter, transportation, transportkostnad etc. If you are searching for ?teknik? you will get hits for materialteknik, mättekniker, flygtekniken, etc.

Using parentheses
More refined searches are possible if you use parentheses. If you are searching for material on kollektivtrafik(public transport) and ekonomi/finansiering (economy/financing), you can use the following search string: (kollektivtrafik) AND (ekonomi OR finansiering). Without the parentheses, the search kollektivtrafik AND ekonomi would first be executed, and then all that concerns financing would be added.

The "freetext" field
If you write a word or phrase in this field, the whole database will be searched for this word or phrase. In the freetext field you can use "AND", "OR and "NOT", as well as parentheses and truncation.

The "title" field
If you write a word or phrase in this field, you will get references which have precisely this word or phrase in their title. In the title field you can use "OR", "AND" and "NOT", as well as parentheses and truncation.

The "author" field
By writing a name in this field, you will get references to literature where this name is the name of the author. The author name is most often written in the form Svensson Karl or Svensson K. If you are uncertain of the spelling of a name, you can either use OR and write down all the variants you can think of, or use truncation, i.e. svensson k?.
In the author field you can also use "OR", "AND" and "NOT", as well as parentheses.

The "year of publication" field
Write the year with four digits – 1995.

Searching in two or more fields
If you write a word or phrase in different fields, for example andersson in the author field and utsläpp (discharge, emission) in the title field, you are searching for references in which Andersson is the author and the word utsläpp forms part of the title. The search works in the same way if you write data in several or other fields.

Dennis contains references to information material, documents accessible to the public, articles in periodicals, investigations etc which concern the "Dennis package", the infrastructure scheme for the Greater Stockholm Region. The database comprises over 7500 references, input over the period 1990 to the summer of 1997.

How to borrow

You will find some of the material in a more traditional archive consisting of hardcopy documents and called "Dennis Agreement". From 15 October 1999 this is held by the County Archives in Stockholm. It comprises ca 10 metres of shelving and contains memoranda, agreements and resolutions, presentation material, the reference library of the Dennis Office, and a very interesting collection of press cuttings of very broad coverage.
